New Jersey workers report to their jobs every day — some of them quite early in the morning — to complete dangerous tasks that put their lives at risk. They do this just to put food on the table for themselves and their families, but at what cost? We all owe a debt of gratitude to every community member who daily puts his or her life on the line in dangerous jobs throughout New Jersey.
One such worker we should honor was a man who lost his life in a tragic cement mixer accident. The tragedy took place on the morning of March 1. Emergency responders were notified of the accident at approximately 10 a.m. that day.
At the time the accident happened, the cement mixer wasn’t being used. A male worker was, nevertheless, working to clean the mixer, when he was trapped beneath its drum. The body of the truck crushed him. The Wayne Fire Department and the regional medical examiner reported to assist at the scene, but unfortunately, the worker succumbed to his injuries.
The incident occurred at the workplace of SBI Materials, a firm that lays cement for sidewalks. No other details were released about why this accident happened, and it may be time before authorities carry out a complete investigation into the incident.
Following a fatal workplace accident, surviving family members of the deceased worker will be struggling to come to emotional grips with their loved one’s loss. They will also be struggling financially, and that’s where a workers’ compensation claim for death benefits can be very helpful. If successfully navigated, a death benefits claim can help family members with end-of-life expenses and income replacement during the difficult time after losing a loved one.
