Jersey City police say that they have apprehended a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed two teenage boys. The 20-year-old driver was taken into custody without incident.

Police say that the man surrendered himself to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Officer after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He has been charged with two counts of knowingly fleeing the scene of a fatal car accident.

According to authorities, the accused man was driving an Altima in Jersey City when he crashed into two teenagers on a bicycle. The crash left both teenagers dead. The deceased teenagers were a 15 year-old, who died at the crash site, and a 16 year-old whom doctors pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center not long after the collision.

According to authorities, the driver of the car and three passengers who were in the car ran away from the accident site on foot. However, two of the passengers came back to help the victims. The third passenger has been charged with “hindering” because she did not return to the scene. Her court date has been set for November.

Friends and family members held a vigil to remember the two friends who died. Grief counselors also came to the Dickinson High School to speak with friends of the teens.

When a tragedy like this results in the death of two young community members, friends and family members will want answers. Family members may also want to investigate the possibility of pursuing wrongful death claims to seek financial restitution from the party or parties who caused the fatal crash.
