Most workers in New Jersey are struggling to earn a living and put food on the table. However, some workers are doing this in very dangerous jobs that have a higher likelihood of causing them serious bodily harm and even death. The fact is certain industries are much more dangerous than others.
In 2015, over 94,000 workplace illnesses and injuries occurred in New Jersey alone. The industries that contributed the most to this number were the trade, utilities and transportation industries. These industries resulted in over 25,000 injuries and illnesses last year. An additional 18,700 illnesses and injuries happened in the health and education fields. Amazingly, the construction industry experienced a decline in the total number of injuries and illnesses compared to the numbers in 2014.
Among the 72,000 illnesses and injuries from the private sector, 49,900 were described as more severe in nature, and resulted in multiple days where the employee couldn’t work, resulted in a restriction, or resulted in a job transfer.
What is the takeaway from these numbers? Perhaps the most important takeaway message from these figures is how vital and important the New Jersey workers’ compensation system is toward helping workers get back on their feet again after a serious illness or injury. Another point to think about is the fact that many New Jersey workers who could have qualified for workers’ compensation benefits never realized that they could file a claim.
If you or a loved one has been injured on the job, you may want to consider seeking workers’ compensation benefits. If successfully navigated, a workers’ comp claim could pay for your medical care and time spent unable to work due to a job-related injury or illness.
